How To Elope In Dublin Ireland

Legal Requirements:

  • You must give at least three months' notice of your intention to marry. This notice should be given in person to a Registrar of Marriages in any Civil Registration Service office in Ireland. You must have a residential address in Ireland for at least 15 days before giving the notice.
  • Documents: You will need the following documents to give notice of marriage:

-Valid passports or official identification documents

-Original birth certificates

-If either party was previously married, an original divorce decree absolute or death certificate of the former spouse (if applicable)

-Marriage Registration Form: You and your partner will need to complete a Marriage Registration Form (MRF) during the notification appointment. This form is essential for the marriage to proceed.

  • Marriage Ceremony: The wedding ceremony can take place in a registry office or any other venue that has been approved for civil marriages in Dublin. You can find a list of approved venues from the Health Service Executive (HSE) website.
  • Witnesses: You will need two witnesses present at the wedding ceremony who are at least 18 years old and can understand the language of the ceremony.
  • I recommend seeking assistance from a local wedding planner or celebrant who can guide you through the legal process and ensure all necessary steps are taken. We highly recommend Inspired Events Ireland or Daragh the Ireland Wedding Planner. They are certainly experienced and will be able to help you check things off your list so that you are fully prepared come wedding day!

There is also the option to have a non-legal binding ceremony or a "celebratory ceremony" which wouldn't include any legal requirements. Several of our clients chose to elope at their local city courthouse in the US and then head overseas to celebrate their marriage in Ireland. It's a great way to cut any stress of legality out of planning- my husband and I actually chose to do this so that we could have a close friend officiate our ceremony without needing to get licensed.

The Historical Significance of Dublin

Dublin is known for its deep history and stunning architecture, making it an ideal location for couples seeking a non-traditional wedding experience. This is one of the big reasons Maggie and Dom chose downtown Dublin for their elopement photos.

The city is home to numerous historic landmarks and buildings, such as Kilmainham Gaol, which holds great historical significance and has witnessed countless stories of love and sacrifice throughout the years. By choosing Dublin as the destination for an elopement, couples can immerse themselves in the city's fascinating past and create their own unique love story within its historic walls. Maggie and Dominik explored downtown for about an hour and we finished up photos overlooking River Liffey at sunset. It was magical!

What does Dublin offer?

Dublin offers a vibrant and lively atmosphere that adds a touch of excitement to any elopement or celebration. The city is renowned for its lively pubs, traditional music, and warm hospitality. Couples can choose to exchange vows in a traditional Irish pub, serenaded by local musicians, or opt for a more modern and chic venue in the heart of the city, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of Dublin's vibrant streets. The friendly and welcoming nature of the locals ensures that couples feel embraced and celebrated throughout their elopement experience. We had such a wonderful experience during our visit and highly recommend it to our couples looking for something unique and fun as an alternative to a traditional wedding. Heck, we'll take any excuse to hop on a plane and visit again!!

Some Logistics To Consider:

  • Choose a suitable date for your elopement, considering weather conditions and any local events that may impact your experience. Downtown Dublin can get crazyyyy during certain holidays, so plan accordingly. If you are worried that there may be too many people in your photos, consider doing a sunrise session before everyone is up for the day!
  • Find accommodation in the downtown area that suits your preferences and budget, either by researching hotel options or booking an Airbnb for a more personalized experience. We stayed at the Moxy in Downtown Dublin and absolutely loved it. Highly recommend!
  • Plan your transportation, taking advantage of Dublin's well-connected public transportation system or considering renting a car for more flexibility. We really enjoyed taking the tram and the bus as well. Both were enjoyable, but downtown Dublin is fairly easy to walk as well.
  • Familiarize yourself with the downtown area and its landmarks, creating an itinerary that includes potential ceremony locations, photography spots, and romantic places for post-elopement celebrations. A few we recommend are River Liffey, Saint Patrick's Cathedral and The Temple Bar.
  • Check the availability and accessibility of chosen locations, as some may require prior reservations or have specific regulations for events or communicate these concerns with your photographer who will likely be more than happy to help in any way!
