Shawna creates luxury, herbal products to enhance a more ritualistic lifetsyle. She also creates whimsical, intentional floral designs for love ceremonies, farm to table and intimate events.
I had the incredible pleasure of meeting Shawna for the first time last year in Asheville, NC. We collaborated on a branding and bridal shoot together, and instantly became friends. I loved her passion and I was drawn to what her business and art brought to the table.
I highly recommend you scroll down, or watch our interview to see her breathtaking floral art pieces.
We asked her three burning questions that will act as tips for choosing your wedding florist. Asked by our Instagram followers, here are the answers:
QUESTION #1: “For someone who is newly engaged, how should they go about finding the right wedding florist, and why is it important to have a connection with them?
Shawna: “Well, first of all, let’s start with finding your wedding florist. You should start looking for your florist at least a year to a year and a half out from your wedding date.
You want to have a connection with your floral designer so that they align with your aesthetic and your values.
For me to feel inspired to created floral designs, I need to connect with my bride. I need to know that she is in align with my energies.”
Taylor: “I think that with booking any vendor, connection falls short sometimes. I don’t think that brides necessarily know how important is it to connect with your vendors.
They don’t just show up, work and leave. They are apart of the entire journey, from start to finish.
Behind the face of Instagram, there’s a person there. There’s a person who cares about you and who wants to make your wedding day f*cking awesome.”
QUESTION #2: What happens when a bride knows absolutely nothing about flowers? How do they choose their wedding florals?
Shawna: “It’s really your floral designer’s job to find the flowers that are perfect for you. You don’t have to know anything about flowers. That is what you are hiring us to do.
All you need to know is: What is the feeling you’re trying to evoke during your wedding? What are your favorite colors? What flowers are nostalgic to you?
I believe that flowers feel. I believe that they put out energy. That’s why it’s important to have those flowers that mean something to you.”
QUESTION #3: “I know that you are very environmentally aware and in tune with the Earth. Can you tell us some unique ways to recycle wedding flowers?
Shawna: “I have been really getting into making smudge bundles out of the florals in bouquets. Smudge bundles, to me, are such a ritual object.
Typically, the roses that are used inside of arrangements, smell so good.
I’ve started to just dry all the flowers used. Then I will get sage or Sweet Annie, or maybe go forage some type of herb from outside. Then I’ll make the smudge bundles. Drying the bouquet creates a little keepsake.
I haven’t done this yet, but I look forward to making resin deposits out of the flowers.
Taylor: “When I got married, we actually did make smudge sticks out of some of the flowers. We shadowboxed for our parents and grandparents. But my favorite was when my mother, my grandmother and I made little bouquets and took them to the nursing home to donate. It was the best experience.”
Shawna: “Yeah! Guys. please don’t throw your flowers away. Please, please, pleeeeeease have somebody take them home for you.
Taylor: “I think that’s a good message because, I guarantee you, 9 out of 10 brides don’t even think about saving their wedding flowers at the end of the day.
I think it’s a strong message to tell our brides before the wedding: Be aware that you paid for all of these flowers. They are so special and so important.”
Shawna: “And if you are wondering how to keep your flowers without them molding, here’s a secret:
Take them out of the water. Spray them with alcohol. Hang them up in a cool, dark place. It will help retain the color and they will last and last.
Shawna: You just have to ask yourself: How important is it to you to look back on your wedding and have incredible memories? You can’t really put a price on someone who knows how to create the energy that you want for your wedding.
